Barbara Landau specializes in environmental, land use, and construction law and has expertise in brownfields redevelopment. She advises businesses, public entities, and non-profit clients on environmental matters including cleanup, regulatory compliance, liability protection, real estate acquisition and due diligence. She also assists clients with site redevelopment, including permitting, design and construction contracts, and business life-cycle matters.

Prior to joining Noble & Wickersham LLP in 2008, Barbara worked in the pubic sector, private practice, as in-house counsel to a brownfields redevelopment company, and as an urban planner. Barbara draws on this broad background to give our clients pragmatic advice to help them realize their objectives.


Prior Professional Experience

Private Law Practice

BCK Law, P.C., Of Counsel (2004-2008). Represented businesses, municipalities, nonprofit entities, and private developers in environmental, land use, energy and real estate matters.

Brownfields Recovery Corp., General Counsel. (1999-2003). Managed legal matters for a real estate developer engaged in remediating and redeveloping environmentally impacted properties. Structured transactions to limit potential environmental liability, negotiated purchase and sale agreements, leases, partnership agreements and addressed general legal matters for the corporation and its real estate portfolio.


Public Sector


MA Department of Environmental Protection, Brownfields Coordinator (1996-1999). Designed and implemented the Massachusetts Brownfields Act; assisted with amendment of DEP regulations; and provided technical assistance to municipalities, community development corporations, and businesses.

MA Executive Office of Economic Affairs, Assistant General Counsel (1993–1999). Advised agency on general legal matters, including regulatory and environmental matters. Drafted regulations, coordinated environmental permit streamlining study, developed Covenant Not to Sue pilot project, and represented agency on the Clean Air Act SIP Steering Committee.


Urban Planning Experience


Abt Associates (1985-1987). Developed research protocols; analyzed affordable housing programs and municipal land use policies; and provided technical assistance and training for HUD housing programs.

Cambridge Housing Authority (1982-1985). Assisted in planning, modernization, and redevelopment of public housing developments.

Admitted to bar, Massachusetts; member of Massachusetts Bar Association, Boston Bar Association.

Published several articles on Brownfields redevelopment including articles for MCLE and the Massachusetts Municipal Association,
